Small Tortoiseshell
Good to see several of these in my garden over the last couple of weeks thanks to the warm spell of weather.
Gatekeeper
A species that has proved rather elusive to me this year, perhaps because they’re down in numbers!?
Common Blues 2
A second shot of the pair of Common Blues, this time backlit.
Common Blues
Really pleased to find this pair of Common Blues in copula on my local patch recently.
Again this is an uncropped image so please view fullscreen to fully appreciate it!!
Silver-washed Fritillary
Back to the Butterflies this evening and a rather tatty looking Silver-washed Fritillary on the white Buddleia in my garden.
This is another full-frame uncropped shot using a 25mm extension tube to achieve a closer focus distance, best viewed full screen.
Small Tortoiseshell
A species that has been conspicuous by it’s absence this season, good to see one or two this week. This specimen has clearly been around awhile but I also saw a couple of fresh ones.
Speckled Wood
A species which I find difficult to get clean shots of as it usually rests on leaves or the ground. Happy to catch this one perched on a stem of grass!
Red Admiral
A Red Admiral nectaring on White Buddleia in my garden
Comma
Hardly seen any of these this year, good to finally capture this one in my garden.
Small Copper 5 – Happy World Photography Day
One last shot of a Small Copper, you’re probably bored of them now
Common Blue (m) 2
A much cleaner and fresh looking specimen than my previous shot, taken on my new local patch on Dartmoor

Another from my new local patch displaying nicely in the sun.

Meadow Brown
From my local meadow back at the end of July
Small Copper 3
A final shot for the #BigButterflyCount photo competition. Hope you all did your final counts today?!

Small Copper 2
A second shot of one of the Small Coppers from my new site on the last day of the #BigButterflyCount – don’t forget to get out today and count how many Butterflies you can see in 15 minutes
Small Skipper
Delighted to find a new location this weekend, very close to my house, with a nice selection of Butterflies including this Small Skipper. Good numbers of Small Coppers, Common Blues and a couple of ageing Marbled Whites too, as well as Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers.
Common Blue (m) (Explored 7 August 2016)
A male to go with the female posted yesterday from the same location. A little battle scar on his wing tip shows his blue upper wing colour nicely.
Small Skipper
From back in July on my local patch
Small White (Explored 16 August 2016)
A Small White on a Wallflower in my garden a couple of weeks back.
Silver-washed Fritillary on Buddleia
Another shot from Cotehele House and Gardens
Nemo the Small Copper (Explored 29 July 2016)
Taken at Cotehele House and Gardens in the wildflower meadow. I called him Nemo because of his little wing 😉
Marbled White (f)
My first shot this year of a female Marbled White, hoping to catch one with a male but no luck yet!
Marbled White (m) (Explored 29 July 2016)
A male Marbled White taken at the same location and time as my previous post of a female, starting to look a little tattered now.
Silver-washed Fritillary
Taken by the River Tavy, Dartmoor, nectaring on a Bramble flower.

A first sighting this season of one these little gems this week by the River Lyd, Dartmoor

Marbled White on Heath Spotted Orchid
A shot I was hoping for this year, a Marbled White nectaring on a Heath Spotted Orchid!
Meadow Brown
The first one of the year in my garden this week
Painted Lady
Taken a couple of weeks back when it was still warm and sunny!!
Large Skipper (Explored 24 June 2016)
Taken on my visit to Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve last Saturday
Wood White
Spent a very pleasant and productive morning with fellow togger Nick at Meeth Quarry on Saturday. The Wood Whites were few and far between but this one sat nicely for me to get some decent shots.
The Wood White and the Ant
Another shot of the Wood White being photobombed by an Ant!
Green Hairstreak
It’s taken me a while to find these this year but finally found this individual this week roosting in the Gorse.
Small White (m)
Found roosting in my garden one evening this week
Heath Fritillary
Back to May from my visit to Lydford Old Railway with the Heath Fritillaries. Hoping for some warmer weather this week for the Butterflies!
Heath Fritillary
I spent a very enjoyable morning yesterday with the Heath Fritillaries at my local reserve. This beautiful butterfly is still on the endangered list and has only survived because of outstanding conservation work.
Heath Fritillary (Explored 29 May 2016)
My favourite shot from my session with the Heath Fritillaries this week.
Heath Fritillary
Another shot of one of the Heath Fritillaries from this week, making no apologies for posting lots of shots of these beautiful insects
Pearl-bordered Fritillary
My fifth species of Butterfly this season. Not the perfect background as they were sitting close to the ground, hope to get some better shots on my next visit to the site.
Holly Blue (male)
My fourth species of Butterfly captured this year, a Holly Blue feeding on a Skimmia flower in my garden
Green-veined White
Another shot of a Green-veined White Butterfly posing nicely on a Bluebell in my garden.
Green-veined White
The warm weather is bringing out the Butterflies now here in Devon. My third species photographed this year.
Speckled Wood
A pristine Speckled Wood sitting on Euphorbia in my garden.
Peacock
Kick-starting my Butterfly season this Peacock settled nicely on a Wallflower in my garden. Hoping for some warmer weather to encourage more species to take to the wing.
